AGA STERCZYŃSKA

(Agnieszka Sterczyńska)

Dancer, choreographer, mover, dance researcher, overthinker.

Since early childhood she has flaneured between disciplines: classical music, theatre, filmmaking, cultural studies, radio journalism, writing, photography and dance. She has chosen dance and choreography, because only there she finds a sense of completeness and fulfilment of her insurmountable need to move.

She graduated from Choreography at the Academy of Music in Łódź (2017), Cultural Studies at the University of Warsaw (MA, 2014), where she wrote the first academic paper in Poland on the movement language created by Ohad Naharin: Gaga – a new kind of dance?, Cultural Studies at the SWPS University of Social Sciences and Humanities (BA) and the Faculty of Arts at the University of Picardie Jules Verne in Amiens (Erasmus, 2012).

Her performances were shown in Poland, Germany, Israel and online. She has been involved in interdisciplinary and international cooperation. In 2020 the Institute of Music and Dance awarded her a scholarship for international dance activity. In the summer 2020 she took part in the Our Stories Creation Residency organised by Addo Platform. As a result of this creative process, she presented online a personal video project Shamefulness. She was an artist in residence 2019/2020 in The Kelim Choreography Center in Bat Yam (Tel Aviv) with a collaborative dance duet If I wear created in the years 2017-2020. The residency was supported by The Adam Mickiewicz Institute in Warsaw. Her solo g-force was invited to The Wall Series in PAUL Studios Berlin and The Solo Dance Contest in Gdańsk (2019). In 2017 her piece Feel free not to escape Fromm was selected as one of the five most interesting performances created by young Polish choreographers and shown at the 7th International Dance Theatres Festival OPEN STAGE in Mościce Art Centre. Solo Nieobliczalność (Incalculability) received the I prize in the Open Stage competition, Warsaw Dance Platform 2015.

In her dance practice
she explores the connections
between mind and body,
the potential of applying mental images into movement.
As a choreographer
she uses not only her experience as a professional dancer, but also
her deep engagement in different movement methods,
her background in other artistic disciplines,
her knowledge of anthropology.
She quests for richness of movement qualities,
clarity of form deriving from feeling the body from the inside.
She seeks
non-obvious beauty,
relationships between abstract movement and the meaning,
between unreality and realness.
